Cats and kittens need a quiet space to feel safe. Many cats or kittens need socializing, which requires a time commitment of 1-3 hours per day. If you’ve never socialized before, we will guide you along the way. Socializing is incredibly rewarding and can truly save a cat’s life, and it gets them ready for adoption. Some cats might require medication. We will provide instructions and guide you through the process.
The foster parent must be 21 or older. Foster kitties MUST be in homes with stable environments. Preferably with at least one member home during part of the day. Where are our fosters based? We are currently only able to accept foster applications from residents of the following neighborhoods: Astoria, LIC, Sunnyside Jackson Heights and Woodside. If you live slightly outside of one of these areas, but have your own car or are willing to help transport the cat, that works too!
The length of a foster placement depends on age, health, and the cat’s social skills. Illness or socialization needs may extend their stay. Adult cats may remain in foster care for longer periods, depending on medical or behavioral needs. Most foster commitments can last anywhere from 1 month on the short side to 6 months on the long side.
Yes, our fosters supply food, litter, and toys. We are responsible for all medical expenses, such as prescription drugs and vet visits.
Fostering requires time in your schedule, and a space in your home, such as an office, or extra bedroom – at least for the next few days while your new foster gets acclimated to their new environment. To set up your foster’s new space, you will need a litter box, litter, food, water bowls, treats, a cozy bed (shy cats prefer caves), and some fun toys are an added bonus!
Yes! Just not right away. Foster cats/kittens must be kept isolated for at least one week while they acclimate to the home. The reason why we do this is because most cats tend to be fearful, especially if they are just being moved from the streets. We want them to start feeling safe in their new environment before we introduce them to any household pets. You’ll need to provide a safe, clean space separate from other animals. All household pets must be current on vaccinations and spayed and neutered.
What if I have a vacation or time away planned? Depending on when your vacation time is, we can work around when we place a foster with you, or, depending on the temperament of the cat, we may be able to place the cat briefly with another foster till your return.
All medical care is provided and coordinated by Cat Connection NYC. Fosters must contact us directly for any medical or behavioral concerns. Private veterinary care or outside treatment is not permitted.
Yes. There are opportunities to foster shy, sick, medically sensitive, or cats needing extra behavioral support. Assignments depend on your experience, home environment, and comfort level.
Yes. Fosters are responsible for bringing cats/kittens to our vets for vaccinations, wellness exams, and emergencies. Reliable transportation is required; your own car or an Uber works.
Send us lots of great photos and videos to preview on their adoption profile. We will set up a WhatsApp group for you and our social media person for you to add cute cat content. Think Dating Profile! Upload kitty’s best pics! The more information we have about your foster kitties personality: likes, dislikes, routine, bad habits, and needs, will help us find the best adopter. What is the adoption process? All potential adopters will have an adoption interview with our team to determine if they are a good fit for your foster kitty. Once the adopter has been approved and agreed to the terms of adoption, we will reach out to you to let you know we have someone interested in your kitty. After a text introduction, the potential adopter will come to your home at an agreed-upon time to meet the foster kitty. They will most likely have a lot of questions about your foster cat’s personality, routine, and favorite things. It’s up to you to be transparent about your cat/kitten.
That’s great news! You absolutely get first dibs. Or maybe you want to foster-to-adopt? This is a great way to learn if one of our cats is a good fit for your family prior to committing to adoption. If you have adoption questions, please email us at [email protected]
